A poor school with 340 children, grade 1-13 from low income families and 36 teachers use the new facilities.
The school is situated in isolated rural village called Kiriwanagara and away from the Haputale city area in Uva Province. In dry season their water source well get dry and this school is struggling for water many months during the year, mostly February to April and July to November and no water for drinking and even for cleaning purposes. This is a terrible situation especially for girls and female teachers. Majority of the Parents working in vegetable farms for their family income and some others do daily labor, these villages are very poor.
Realized, improved water and sanitation facilities:
Water place investigation and construct a new deep tube well (drilling) in school premises, construct a pump house and supply electricity cable and panel board, construct a low concrete water stand with hand rail in the highest point of the mountain, supply 5.000L water stock tank, construct 2 low concrete water stand with hand rails (so that they can keep their existing water tanks on it) inside the school premises because the school is situated in 5 different land levels, construct total pipeline system for the school premises and for the sanitary buildings, construct 4 concrete hand washing units (one unit has 4 taps) and 6 tap posts, paint all our constructions.
Parents and children help transport materials from the gate to construction site digging and fixing for the pipe line. Now they have water throughout the year for drinking, cleaning and also for vegetable and flower planting inside the school without any problem.
We had to spend more money than we estimated because,
• We did estimate on end of the year 2018 for the project and we could not finished the project within the deadline due to Easter attack in year 2019, and landslides due to the heavy rain in middle of the year 2019 and also the COVD 19 pandemic. And by the year 2020/2022 the prices of every materials increased more than 200%.
• Because of the COVID 19 pandemic we had to restart the project several times.
• We made an expensive DTW drilling instead of the planned mountain source.
• We worked at 5 height levels.
• Construct additional hand washing units and tap posts in addition to the estimate. (Because of COVID 19 school needed more washing units for hand washing)
