Rural school with 684 children grade 1-13 from poor Tamil families and 29 teachers make use of the new facilities.
School is situated in very rural area (Poonagala village), far away from the Bandarawela town area Badulla District in Uva Province and villagers who are living here is very poor, and some parents of the children working as daily labours in vegetable farms and tea states.
The existing pipeline from the mountain source is more than 50 years old (water source is made in English ruling period); a lot of leakage through broken pipes and rusty pipes. They had not enough water for sanitary facilities.
Daily the oldest schoolboys repair the pipes with rubber bicycle tires, a never ending job.
Realized, improved water and sanitation facilities:
Construction source well, well cover, source water bring by gravity 800m long, made a concrete floor to keep the 10.000Lt existing water tank to stock, construct 4 low concrete water towers in different land levels to keep the existing water tanks, total pipeline system from source well to the school premises and to school buildings and sanitary buildings, construction of 6 hand washing units (1 unit has 4 taps), construct 8 tap posts, painting all constructions. After the project completion our foundation handed over fruit and herbal trees to plant inside the school premises and to plant around the water source to protect the water level and now their water, sanitation and hygiene is in very good condition.
Parents and teachers help carry materials from gate to construction sites, digging for the pipelines.
